About Madigan Ray
I would love to tell you that I have endless degrees, internships, and connections like many other candidates. What I’ve got are a high school diploma, a couple of college credits, and a string of customer & food service jobs. The struggle is real and I have experienced it. Right out of high school, I joined the workforce. I attended community college long enough to get a two-year degree while working in retail at an amusement park. I held several positions over my 10 years there, where I was frequently recognized for being hard-working, detail-oriented, and organized. My outstanding record with cash handling in retail was noticed by the finance department, who moved me into Accounts Payable, where I had to be aware of budgets and forecasts for a multi-national corporation. While at the amusement park, I improved the environmental impact of my workplace by helping formulate new climate-friendly policies. I currently work doing payroll for a nation-wide gym, where I am the co-chair of the LGBTQ+ Employee Resource Group and am on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Council. Before moving to Rio Rancho, I volunteered at Love Your Feral Felines, taking care of their rotating crew of 40+ rescue cats and kittens. I’m married to my spouse of seven years, Mike, and we live in Rio Rancho with our two dogs, Harley Quinn & Loki.
Why I am Running
A Vision For The Future
As a working-class millennial, I’m tired of government at all levels making decisions that will affect future generations without those generations being in the room where it happens. I believe that government exists to serve its citizens. Right now, it’s failing to serve everyone equally. In addition to an astronomical cost of living, we’re seeing extremists in city & state governments all over the country pass legislation to suppress human rights and further damage our planet. I’m running to make sure that doesn’t happen here in Sandoval County and to ensure that our natural resources, people, and future are protected for generations to come. I believe all citizens have value, irrespective of their race, gender identity, sexual orientation, marital or parental status, country of origin, wealth, religion, or housing status, and I will do my best to serve everyone who shares that ideal.
Issues
Sandoval County is facing many of the same issues seen all over the country. These issues need fresh eyes bringing bold solutions.
Human Rights
Sandoval County must take meaningful action on missing and murdered Indigenous people, stand against the growing tide of anti-LGBTQ+ legislation and discrimination, vehemently oppose any attempt to restrict the bodily autonomy of women, and unequivocally protect the voting rights of all citizens.
Renewable Energy/Climate Change
We need bold moves to combat the climate crisis that don’t put the onus entirely on average citizens. The actions of governments, businesses, and agriculture are the largest causes of climate change, so the biggest solutions must come from them. When it comes to changing behaviors in environmentally-friendly ways, I support incentives for consumers and mandates for governments & companies.
Unions/Workers Rights
If 40 hours of work doesn’t pay for a week of food, shelter, healthcare, childcare, and the ability to enjoy your time spent not working, then what is the point of working? Theodore Roosevelt said minimum wage exists “to secure the normal standard of living – a standard high enough to make morality possible, to provide for education and recreation, to care for immature members of the family, to maintain the family during periods of sickness, and to permit of reasonable saving for old age.” Currently, the local minimum wage doesn’t come close to meeting any of those requirements, and workers at minimum wage jobs are treated as though they deserve to be in poverty. Minimum wage needs a huge adjustment to improve the lives of all working people in this county. I support the right of all workers to unionize and collectively bargain.
Public transit
A robust, affordable public transit system is the best solution for crumbling roads, a growing population, and the climate crisis. Reducing the reliance on personal vehicles fosters better air quality, allows folks without reliable transportation to have broader employment opportunities, and increases public safety by providing a viable alternative to drinking and driving.
Crime
Meaningful, lasting crime reduction is about addressing the causes of crime. Addiction treatment and mental healthcare is crime prevention. A housing & jobs program for people released from prison is crime prevention. A living wage, good public schools with after-school programs, affordable healthcare, and access to stable housing are also all crime prevention.
